Built to withstand the elements.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHT: AWE RANCH, JOSHUA TREE CA
This 7,500 sq ft off-grid retreat sits on 358 acres just outside Joshua Tree, California, designed as a gathering place for artists and thinkers to recharge in the desert landscape. Designer Richard Pruitt of McCree General Contractors & Architects turned to Millboard decking and siding to meet the demands of one of the toughest climates around.
The result is a project where Millboard moves seamlessly between exterior and interior applications. From expansive outdoor areas to highly detailed interior spaces, the material was selected not only for its appearance, but for its ability to perform in demanding conditions.

BUILT TO WITHSTAND THE ELEMENTS
Joshua Tree's dramatic terrain comes with equally dramatic weather — wide temperature swings, intense UV exposure, and very little rainfall. The project needed materials that could hold up to that punishment with minimal upkeep, while still bringing warmth and natural character to the design. Millboard's durability, versatility, and timber-inspired look made it the clear choice.
For a remote property of this scale, reducing ongoing maintenance was particularly important. Materials needed to withstand the desert environment without requiring frequent refinishing or replacement, allowing the ranch to remain focused on its purpose rather than constant upkeep.

FAR BEYOND THE DECK
What stands out at AWE Ranch is just how far Millboard was pushed beyond typical exterior use. Shadow Line+ siding was installed as a kitchen backsplash and custom glassware shelving, standing up to moisture, staining, and warping in a high-use space. A shower room was fully clad in Millboard for its resistance to rot, swelling, and discoloration — bringing a warm, natural feel indoors without the maintenance burden of timber or grout. Boards were even used across interior partitions, where their natural heat-transfer resistance helped improve thermal performance for an off-grid property running on its own power.
These applications demonstrate the flexibility of Millboard beyond conventional decking and cladding. By carrying the same material language throughout different areas of the property, the design creates a consistent visual connection between the interior and exterior while taking advantage of the material’s performance characteristics in spaces where traditional timber would require more maintenance.
PERFORMANCE THAT MATCHES THE VISION
The finished property exceeded expectations both visually and functionally — the wood-free composition held up without warping, splintering, or noticeable fading, and the slip-resistant surface kept access safe across shifting desert temperatures and occasional rain. Low maintenance requirements meant more time enjoying the space and less time maintaining it — a meaningful advantage for a remote, off-grid estate built around sustainable, low-impact living.
AWE Ranch demonstrates how material selection can support both the architectural vision and the practical demands of a site. In an environment where heat, UV exposure, and limited access can make maintenance challenging, Millboard provided a durable alternative that could be used across a remarkably wide range of applications.
